Òwe Yorùbá: Adìẹ funfun kò mọ ara rẹ̀lágba

Òwe Yorùbá: Adìẹ funfun kò mọ ara rẹ̀lágbà

Òwe Yorùbá

Adìẹ funfun kò mọ ara rẹ̀lágbà.

Yoruba Proverb

The white chicken does not realise its age.

Meaning:

Self respect is an essentiality, respect yourself.

Usage:

The people of Yoruba land believe that at certain age range, there are something you should and shouldn’t do and some place you should and shouldn’t be, hence this proverb.

This Yoruba Proverb is used to caution older people who fails to realise their age, judging from the activities they involve themselves in and with whom they do so.

“Adìẹ funfun kò mọ ara rẹ̀lágbà” is in the real sense, an insult to the person for which this proverb is used because it clearly point out that he/she doesn’t have a sense of self-consciousness to realise his level or category.

Moral:

The way you present yourself is the way you’llbe addressed. Present yourself in a mature way and you’llbe hold in high esteem, otherwise, you’llbe treated as due. So, have a sense of self-respect.
